How Do You Know Where Your Tequila Comes From?

Ever grabbed a tequila bottle and wondered, “Where’s this really coming from?” It might seem like just another spirit on the shelf, but there's a secret code on the label that tells you everything you need to know. Spoiler: It’s called the NOM.

NOM stands for Norma Oficial Mexicana. In the tequila world, it’s a stamp of approval that says, “Hey, this tequila was made following strict quality standards.” Enforced by the Consejo Regulador del Tequila (CRT), the NOM assures you that the tequila inside is the real deal, crafted under regulations that have been around for generations.

But there’s a cool twist. Right next to the NOM, you’ll often see a four-digit number. Think of it like the “about us” page for your tequila - it tells you exactly which distillery is behind your bottle.

Consider these examples:

NOM 1414 – Feliciano Vivanco y Asociados, S.A. de C.V.

Location: Arandas, Jalisco, Mexico (Highlands of Jalisco)
About:
A true powerhouse in the tequila world, NOM 1414 produces a wide variety of brands, showcasing both traditional methods and modern techniques.

Notable Brands: Yeyo, Alma Del Jaguar, Lost Lore, Viva Mexico, Siempre

NOM 1123 – Tequila Cascahuin (Productora de Tequila Cascahuin, S.A. de C.V.)

About: Run by the Rosales family, this distillery is revered for its small-batch, artisanal approach.
Notable Brands: Cascahuin, Siembra Valles, Wild Common, El Gran Legado de Vida, Montagave, El Negocio, Lagrimas Del Valle

NOM 1579 – El Pandillo (Destiladora El Pandillo, S.A. de C.V.)

About: Led by Master Distiller Felipe Camarena, El Pandillo is known for blending innovative processes with deep respect for tequila’s heritage.
Notable Brands: G4, Volans, Terralta, Don Vicente, General Gorostieta

How to Read the Label Like a Pro

Next time you’re about to pick up a bottle, here’s a quick cheat sheet:

  1. Spot the NOM:
Look for that official stamp. It’s your assurance of adherence to tequila standards.
  2. Decode the Number:
See that four-digit code? That’s your shortcut to knowing which distillery crafted your tequila. It’s like a “made in” tag for your drink.
  3. Explore the Backstory:
Use that number as a starting point to learn more about the distillery’s heritage and methods.

Understanding the significance of the NOM and the accompanying distillery number empowers you as a consumer. It’s a badge of honor for the makers and a promise of quality for you. Cheers to sipping smart and knowing where your tequila really comes from!
